UPDATE: Looks like James Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is set to begin filming in the spring. Gunn tells The Howard Stern Show that the film “starts shooting in April 2026.”
Gunn adds that ‘Man Of Tomorrow’ is a Lex Luthor and Superman movie: “It's a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.”
EARLIER: Warner Bros. and James Gunn’s Superman follow-up is now official: not only is it on the fast track—and if you’ve been following along, that shouldn’t come as a surprise—but it now has a title and release date.
It’s called “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” and will be released on July 9, 2027. Production is set to begin early next year. There are some details here which I had previously reported on, no more than a few weeks ago. They have now been made official.
Gunn had already told THR that his Superman follow-up would “begin production not too far away from today,” and that he had just finished a 60-page treatment with dialogue, which now just needs to be turned into a script.
Initially, Gunn refused to label it a “sequel,” but today’s title announcement surely makes it sound like a continuation of this summer’s movie. Let’s be honest, “Superman” will once again be front and center. The plot remains under wraps, though speculation rages on.
“Superman: Man of Tomorrow” was also the title of an animated film that followed Clark Kent in his early days as a hero in Metropolis. The story had Clark revealing himself during a battle with bounty hunter Lobo (Jason Momoa?).
Superman has fared well for Warner Bros., earning solid reviews (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and pulling in $333M domestically, for a $583M global total—despite softer overseas numbers. It hit VOD today.
Looking ahead, “Supergirl” arrives in theaters next summer, “Clayface” begins shooting in September, and “Wonder Woman” is also in the fast lane. It looks like “Man of Tomorrow” is next up on the DCU slate.
