Meryl Streep & Sigourney Weaver to Star in Joseph Cedar’s ‘Useful Idiots’

September 26, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

I’m hearing about a hot project that’s brewing over at Amazon/MGM. It comes from talented director Joseph Cedar and already has two A-list actresses attached to star.

Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver are set to star in Cedar’s “Useful Idiots,” written by “Thelma & Louise” screenwriter Callie Khouri. No plot details have been released yet, but with this level of talent attached, it’s a film to watch. Production is scheduled to begin in January.

It’s no surprise that these two talented actresses would want to work with Cedar. The Israeli filmmaker has consistently excelled at character-driven storytelling, with “Footnote” and “Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer” as prime examples. ‘Norman,’ an underrated gem featuring a career-best Richard Gere, was Cedar’s last film—almost a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Streep, who hasn’t appeared in a film since 2021’s “Don’t Look Up,” is starting to pile up projects once again. Any whispers of retirement have safely been put on the backburner.

Streep shot “The Devil Wears Prada” sequel this summer, is set to star as Aslan the Lion in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia,’ and is also attached to Cameron Crowe’s Joni Mitchell biopic, set to shoot in late 2026.

In the meantime, try to watch Cedar’s ‘Norman,’ and while you’re at it, the excellent “Footnote.” It’s good to have him back in the fold, and I’ll obviously update my post when more information comes through about this next project.
