Joel Coen's ‘Jack of Spades' is a “Gothic Mystery" Set in 1880s Scotland — Damian Lewis Joins the Cast

September 25, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Filming on Joel Coen’s “Jack of Spades” continues in Scotland, and details keep trickling in about this otherwise mysterious new film, which already stars Josh O’Connor, Lesley Manville, and Frances McDormand.

We can add Damian Lewis (“Homeland”) to the cast; he was spotted on the Glasgow set. As for plot details, of which we had none until now, the story is being described as a “gothic mystery” set in 1880s Scotland.

Back in 2021, Coen released “The Tragedy of Macbeth” as his first solo project. At the time, his brother and longtime collaborator, Ethan decided to take a break from filmmaking. The Coens had always worked together — in fact, prior to “Macbeth,” they hadn’t missed a collaboration since their 1984 debut, “Blood Simple.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Joel’s solo sophomore effort turns out. ‘Macbeth’ was visually stunning, but very much a straightforward Shakespeare adaptation. This project seems to be a more original effort from Coen, who also wrote the screenplay. If it’s any good — and I’m betting it will be — could we maybe expect a Cannes 2026 premiere?
