Marlon Wayans on ‘HIM’ Harsh Reviews: “Some Movies Are Ahead of the Curve,” Cites “White Chicks” as Example

September 21, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

It’s no secret that Justin Tipping’s “HIM” was met with harsh reviews. One of the film’s stars, Marlon Wayans, is no stranger to poorly received movies throughout his career.

On Instagram, Wayans shared examples of his past films that were initially panned but later became, in his words, “classics.” He posted Rotten Tomatoes screenshots of “Scary Movie” (55%), “Scary Movie 2” (12%, “Don’t Be A Menace to South Central” (32%), “Haunted House” (10%), and “White Chicks” (15%)—and included “HIM” among them.

I respect critics. Their job is to Critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it’s subjective. I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically recieved and those movies went on to be CLASSICS. So don’t take anyone’s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all. Him in theaters now.

Whether the films Wayans called “classics” actually deserve that label is another debate I’ll happily avoid here. Still, “White Chicks” has gained a cult following, and “Scary Movie” proved popular enough to spawn multiple sequels and even a sixth installment on the way. But “Haunted House”? Really?
