The king is back.
Daniel Day-Lewis, three-time Oscar winner, long regarded as one of cinema’s greatest actors, will end an eight-year hiatus with “Anemone,” which is set to have its world premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival. A first trailer has been released!
The footage immediately reminds you why his presence on screen has been sorely missed since 2017’s “Phantom Thread.” The film itself looks grim, tackling the dark side of bloodlines. It’s an Irish family drama that likely won’t pull any punches. Visually, it looks pretty damn impressive.
“Anemone” is the feature directorial debut of Day-Lewis’ son, artist Ronan Day-Lewis. They co-wrote the script, described as an exploration of the complex ties between brothers, fathers, and sons.
The film stars Day-Lewis alongside Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green, with Ben Fordesman (“Love Lies Bleeding”) helming cinematography duties. Limited release is scheduled for October 3, right in the thick of awards season.
Day-Lewis has “retired” twice before—after “The Boxer” in 1996, when he famously apprenticed as a cobbler in Italy, and again following “Phantom Thread.” His filmography is packed with landmark performances, from “There Will Be Blood” and lGangs of New York” to “My Left Foot,” “Lincoln, and “In the Name of the Father.”
With “Anemone,” he returns not just as a presence, but as a force that feels almost too rare for modern cinema.
