Neon has doubled down on Osgood Perkins. The indie distributor has quietly become the filmmaker’s consistent backer, having released his last three films. The most recent, “The Monkey,” a delirious, blood-drenched riff on Stephen King’s short story, leaned so far into camp that it often felt like a splatter-cartoon more than straight horror.
Now comes “Keeper,” Perkins’ next project, which dropped its first trailer today. The film hits theaters November 14, 2025, making it the director’s second release of the year, but this one looks to be the more serious entry.
The just-released trailer is sharp, and unnerving — less grindhouse excess, and more slow-burn atmosphere. It not only offers a clearer sense of the film’s story but also plays like two teasers in one — each unfolding from a different character’s perspective.
“Keeper” stars Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland as a couple retreating to a remote cabin for their anniversary, only to discover they’re not alone. What follows, per the logline, is the arrival of an “unspeakable evil” that digs up long-buried secrets tied to the cabin.
Production was bare-bones. Perkins reportedly conceived the project during the WGA strike, hiring non-union Canadian writer Nick Lepard to fast-track a script. The shoot wrapped in August 2024 after just three weeks, on a budget under $8M. The filmmaker seems increasingly at home in this low-budget lane.
It’s worth remembering that Perkins’ horror career began with 2015’s “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” before he pivoted to the stylish fairy-tale reimagining of “Gretel & Hansel.” Then came “Longlegs,” the viral campaign, and Nicolas Cage’s unhinged performance helping push the film to a surprise $127M worldwide against a budget of less than $10M.
And yes, for anyone still unaware, Perkins happens to be the eldest son of Anthony Perkins, forever immortalized as Norman Bates in “Psycho.” If nothing else, the family business is alive and well.
