We already knew he was writing it, and it now looks like DCU boss James Gunn is personally fast-tracking his “Superman” sequel—just four weeks after the film’s theatrical release.
In a THR interview, Gunn confirms he’s “finished the detailed treatment on the next story of the Superman saga,” and that his “hope” is to “begin production not too far away from today.”
The treatment is done, which means a very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.
Gunn refuses to call this a “sequel,” but who are we kidding, Superman will be front and center. As for what story he’s adapted, it’s anybody’s guess, but rumors are pointing toward a “Superman/Supergirl” team-up of some sort, or maybe something involving The Authority.
It’s no secret that “Superman” has done reasonably well at the box office and boasts good reviews (83% on RT). Warner Bros,, who have been on a roll, obviously want this sequel to move quickly.
What makes this notable, though, is that Gunn previously, albeit indirectly, denied TheInSneider‘s May report that he was already writing another “Superman” movie. However, now it seems Gunn is indeed headed in that direction.
In the meantime, you have “Superman,” which, despite struggling overseas, has amassed a $333M North American tally. Its current worldwide gross is $583M. Oh, and it’s set to hit VOD on Friday.
Up next within the DCU, “Supergirl” hits theaters next summer. “Clayface” starts production in September. “Wonder Woman” is also on the fast track. Don’t be surprised if “Superman” is next in line.
