Tim Burton is currently working on Warner Bros’ remake of “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman,” a mysterious animated film, and now there may be a third project in the mix — or it could simply be that the animated film and this new project are one and the same.
in an interview with THR, Burton is asked about a rumor the trade has heard that he’s directing a Medusa movie for Sony. This is the first we’ve heard of this project. Of course, Burton being Burton, he deflects, neither confirms nor denies, which in all likelihood means the project is real.
You know what? Tim Burton might actually be a decent choice to direct a Medusa movie. The dark, eerie tone of Greek mythology aligns well with his gothic fantasy style. As far as I know, Burton hasn’t explored ancient mythology before, and quite honestly, it might even work better as an animated film; Burton’s visual flair could blend well with the character.
In the same interview, he refutes Warner Bros. CEO Mike De Luca’s previous claim from last year that “Beetlejuice 3” is in development. In fact, Burton seems genuinely surprised by the news and makes it clear he has no plans to revisit that world.
Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I’ve been replaced […] It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105. I know those odds are not good. I really, really enjoyed making this one, and [Warner Bros.] didn’t even really want to do it. We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it’s like trying to re-create the “Wednesday” dance scene. I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it
For now, we’re not entirely sure what Burton’s next film might be, and he’s keeping his cards close to his chest, preferring not to discuss projects unless they're actively in production—citing past experiences like his canceled “Superman Lives” film with Nicolas Cage as “soul-destroying.”
As long as it’s not another sequel or a Disney-fueled live-action reboot, I’m open to whatever Burton chooses to tackle next.
