After ‘Janet Planet,’ Annie Baker Reunites With A24 for Follow-Up ‘Ancient History’

June 26, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

After her delicate debut, “Janet Planet,” Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker is set to return behind the camera — and once again, she’s doing it with A24.

The new project, titled “Ancient History,” is described as a follow-up of sorts to her first feature, though plot details remain firmly under wraps. Sophia Lillis (“I Am Not Okay with This”) and Daniel Zolghadri (“Funny Pages”) are on board to star.

If “Janet Planet” was Baker dipping her toes into cinema, “Ancient History” suggests a continuation of her minimalist, character-driven style — albeit with new performers. A fall start date is scheduled, which means a 2026 release is very likely.

“Janet Planet” quietly premiered at Telluride in 2023 and earned critical admiration despite barely registering at the box office — it failed to crack $1 million in limited release. Still, Baker won the New York Film Critics Circle prize for Best First Film, and earned a pair of Spirit Award nominations (Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay).
