The live-action remake of “How To Train Your Dragon” earned around $9M on Thursday. I’m not the targeted audience for this one, and still haven’t seen it, but decent reviews might push the film to $90M this weekend, maybe more.
There is a massive audience for IP out there, live-action remakes, and ’Dragon’ clearly scratches that itch for plenty of moviegoers. In fact, the two biggest hits of the summer, so far, have been live-action remakes, the other one being “Lilo & Stitch,” which just hit the $800M global mark.
Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and co-directed the original animated trilogy, returns to direct the live-action remake. The film, which stars Mason Thames, Gerard Butler, Nico Parker, and Nick Frost.
Netflix and Skydance Animation have also called it quits. The two sides announced Monday that they're ending the animated film deal struck back in 2023, framing it as a mutual decision.
