UPDATE: THR reporting that, since this is a reboot, Gadot “will not play the character moving forward.”
EARLIER: With “Superman” set to hit theaters on July 11, followed by Milly Alcock’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in June 2026, here comes news that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU Studios are now officially working on a reboot of “Wonder Woman.”
In a sit-down with EW, Gunn let slip that a “Wonder Woman” movie is actively in development. “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now.” No word yet on who’ll star, as Gunn confirmed the role remains uncast, which quite frankly nixes any odds of Gal Gadot returning.
This comes after Gadot’s run as Diana Prince, which spanned two films under Patty Jenkins. Plans for a third Gadot-led “Wonder Woman” got the axe when Gunn and Safran took the reins to reshape the DCU. Jenkins, back in 2022, shared her take:
I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.
No creative team has been named for the new “Wonder Woman” film, and details remain scarce, but it looks like Gadot won’t be returning, and if I had to bet, neither Jenkins.
If you remember, when they were hired to helm DC Studios, Gunn and Safran got rid of any future Wonder Woman movies, letting go of Jenkins’s services and, consequently, Gadot. The last instalment, “Wonder Woman 1984,” tanked critically and commercially. Nobody cared for it.
It’s unlikely Gadot will return, as Gunn, during his time as DCU head, has deliberately distanced the new DCU from Zack Snyder’s vision. Additionally, Gadot’s acting abilities, often criticized, further diminish her chances of reprising the role. A fresh new start is the aim here.
