Another cult classic looks to be getting rebooted, remade, whatever you want to call it.
Word is that “Near Dark,” Kathryn Bigelow’s awesome 1987 vampire neo-Western is being developed as a series over at A24. This scoop comes via The InSneider, who also notes that Bigelow herself is involved in some capacity.
It’s a bold move by A24, but also not surprising. The studio’s been ramping up its genre TV efforts lately— “Crystal Lake,” a “Friday the 13th” prequel series, is already in the works. A “Near Dark” adaptation fits right into that push.
If you’ve never seen “Near Dark,” it’s a gritty, blood-soaked road movie about a young drifter (Adrian Pasdar) who falls for a mysterious woman (Jenny Wright), only to discover she’s part of a nomadic, homicidal vampire clan. The cast is stacked: Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein play the twisted parental figures, while Bill Paxton absolutely owns every scene he’s in as a vampire lunatic.
Bigelow’s involvement, even if it’s just advisory, is what interests me here. Would she actually direct? It’s hard to believe, but “Near Dark” holds a special place in her heart since it was her breakout, paving the way for “Point Break,” and ultimately making her the first woman to win the directing Oscar.
For the time being, Bigelow has an untitled White House thriller eyeing a fall release. She hasn’t directed a film since 2018’s “Detroit.”
