UPDATE: They lifted the review embargo on this one just as preview screenings started narionwide. The scores are disastrous — 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and 29 on Metacritic.
EARLIER: I still hold out hope that Trey Edward Shults’ “Hurry Up Tomorrow” will turn out to be a strong film. There’s something especially compelling about a movie that provokes such intense, divisive reactions.
Some of the backlash may stem from the intense dislike The Weeknd seems to inspire in some people—especially after the wild ride that was HBO’s “The Idol.” Still, the trailers teased a bold, distinctive vision, and Shults—whose work on “Krisha” proved his talent—is a filmmaker worth watching. Personally, I’m all in.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait until I’m back from Cannes to catch it. It should be noted that Lionsgste still hasn’t lifted the review embargo, and that’s despite “Hurry Up Tomorrow” opening in theaters tomorrow.
