Wes Anderson’s ‘Phoenician Scheme’ To Open 78th Cannes Film Festival?

April 6, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

We’re four days away from Christmas, aka the Cannes Film Festival lineup getting revealed, and we still don’t have an opening night film, let alone the names of the jury, or even an official poster

Usually, the rule of thumb is that any film that opens Cannes must be released the following day in France. Rumor is that Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” which has a May 28 release date in France, might be bumped up two weeks earlier and open Cannes.

Regardless, whether it’s Wes or some other film, the announcement is coming this week, maybe as early as tomorrow, and the current favorite is indeed ‘Phoenician Scheme’ — I’d be shocked if a trailer doesn’t pop up online right after it gets announced.

Now, Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux is prone to change his mind at the last minute, and it should be mentioned that the other titles that have also circulated as possibilities to open the 78th Cannes include Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha” and Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Vie Privee.” Stay tuned …
