Amazon/MGM Acquires John M. Chu's ‘Split Fiction,’ Starring Sydney Sweeney [Updated]

June 2, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Amazon/MGM Studios is closing a deal north of $2M to acquire “Split Fiction,” a film package based on the video game. This could very well end up being John Chu’s next film, after this year’s “Wicked: For Good.”

Chu, who broke big with “Crazy Rich Asians,” directed “In The Heights,” and “Wicked.” He also has adaptations of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Dr. Seuss’ Oh The Places You’ll Go,” and a Britney Spears Biopic in development.

EARLIER: Hollywood is experiencing a major wave of video game adaptations, driven by the success of blockbuster hits like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” and “A Minecraft Movie.”

The latest one has Sydney Sweeney set to headline a movie adaptation of the popular video game “Split Fiction,” with Jon M. Chu attached to direct, according to Variety. The screenplay is being developed by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

The game hasn’t even been out for two months, and they’re already working on the movie adaptation. Someone should tell these studios that no everything is a goldmine — “Until Dawn,” released today, will most likely bomb in theaters this weekend.

“Split Fiction,” created by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts, follows two writers, Mio and Zoe, who become trapped inside the fictional worlds they’ve created. No word yet on whether Sweeney will play Mio or Zoe.

Meanwhile, this is the second video game adaptation Sweeney has attached herself to in the same week. On Monday, it was announced that she was working with Michael Bay on a movie version of “OutRun.” She’s packing in the projects, waiting to see which one actually sticks.
