‘The Goonies’ Sequel Moving Forward at Warner Bros After 40 years —Potsy Ponciroli to Pen the Script

February 14, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Ah, yes, nostalgia. An ‘80s revival is afoot over at Warner Bros. “The Goonies,” a hallmark from that decade, is now officially being fast tracked. I would imagine the entire cast will be back for this one, including Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, and Sean Astin.

Deadline is reporting that Potsy Ponciroli — director of “Old Henry” — has also come aboard to pen the script. No director is currently attached, but it might be Ponciroli who recently signed on to direct “The Rescue,” a Western starring Brandon Sklenar, Regardless, a ‘Goonies’ sequel has been rumored for well over three decades, and it seems like it’s finally happening.

This latest development comes just two weeks after a cast reunion at TCL Chinese Theatre, in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary. “The Goonies” tackled a group of misfit kids — Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk — who embark on a treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. Along the way, they have to navigate booby traps, and hidden caves—all while being chased by the Fratellis, a family of criminals who also want the treasure.

The late Richard Donner directed the original, from a script by Chris Columbus. Steven Spielberg, who produced the 1985 film, has his Amblin Entertainment attached to the project. A sequel, more than 40 years later, and with the original cast, is quite the idea, especially when Corey Feldman happens to be one of the original actors.
