Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to Shoot Cyclops Scene With 6x6 Mechanical Puppet

February 11, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

As Christopher Nolan continues to prep for “The Odyssey,” set to shoot later this month, details are starting to leak out about the film.

According to Greek media, “The Odyssey” will be partially filmed in Greece. Locations include Nestor’s Cave, Voidokilia Beach, Almyrolaka Beach, Methoni Castle, and Acrocorinth. The Greek Ministry of Culture has authorized filming under strict preservation conditions.

More intriguingly, the Polyphemus/Cyclops scenes in “The Odyssey” will be sticking with authenticity, and shot at the legendary Nestor Cave and Voidokilia Beach. A 6x6m mechanical anthropomorphic puppet will be built inside the Cave.

Purely guessing here, but I’d be very surprised if they don’t do touch ups on the Cyclops in post with some CGI blemish. With that said, I’m loving the idea of Nolan using practical effects for this next film.

In the epic poem, Odysseus is trapped by Polyphemus inside the cave, and even sees six of his companions devoured by the creature. It’ll be interesting to see how Nolan depicts Odysseus graphic escape attempt, which I won’t ruin here.

The current ‘Odyssey’ cast includes Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson,  Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo.

Production is set to begin in late February, with Universal slated to release the film in theaters, including IMAX screens, on July 17, 2026.
