In the category of things that probably should have been left unsaid… whatever grudge Trump might have held with Reiner, this was certainly not the way to come to terms with it.
In one of his final interviews, Reiner said he felt “absolute horror” at Charlie Kirk’s assassination and praised Erika Kirk’s speech at the memorial.
“Horror. An absolute horror,” he said when asked about the shooting.
“I unfortunately saw the video of it, and it’s beyond belief what happened to him. That should never happen to anybody. I don’t care what your political beliefs are—that’s not acceptable,” Reiner told Piers Morgan.
One would have hoped Trump might have taken the same high road Reiner did. There was clearly no love lost between Reiner and the president, but still—this is not the way to go about it.
No matter one man’s politics, this man, who gave us some of the most beloved films of the last 40 years, is gone—and turning that loss into a petty point of spite helps no one and honors nothing.
