The current box-office landscape basically consists of a handful of major hits, a modest group performing decently, and the rest struggling badly.
A few weeks ago, I reported that “Zootopia 2” was on track for around $500M in its opening five-day weekend, and at the time, it already seemed like an immense number. Turns out, it made more — around $560M. Storming past its already high expectations.
What’s even more remarkable about these numbers is that “Zootopia 2” only earned $156M domestically, which means $400M internationally, including a record-breaking $272M in China alone. It’s the hughest global debut of 2025.
That $560M tally is the fourth highest worldwide opening in box office history — only behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($600M), “Avengers: Infinity War” ($640M) and “Avengers: Endgame” ($1.2B).
Until this month, the only movies that had crossed the $1 billion mark without receiving a sequel were “Titanic” ($2.2 billion), “Barbie” ($1.44 billion), and “Zootopia” ($1.025 billion). Seeing “Zootopia 2” reach the billion-dollar milestone as well—nearly a decade after the original— would be genuinely impressive.
Meanwhile, “Wicked: For Good” continued on, but is currently behind the numbers of last year’s first instalment. The sequel earned $62M from Fri-Sun — that’s a 60% drop from its opening weekend. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be matching that film’s $758M worldwide receipts. The drop might have to be blamed on word of mouth not being as good this time around.
Nevertheless, “Wicked For Good” will hit $300M in the US on Monday or Tuesday, and only four movies have earned more than that this year. It’s a hit, although on the same level as the first one.
Next weekend, we have a “Five Nights at Freddy’s” sequel coming out, but ws’ll have to wait a few weeks for the next big potential blockbuster to hit theaters —December 19, that’s when “Avatar: Fire and Ash” rolls out to the world.
