UPDATE: An insane Wednesday for “Zootopia 2,” storming past expectations, with a tally of $40M in ticket sales. This film is going to hit the $170M domestic mark by Sunday.
EARLIER: “Zootopia 2” is going to be huge. It might very well end up becoming the highest grossing film of 2025.
Disney’s animated sequel earned over $10M in preview screenings on Tuesday — the second-highest preview start ever for a Disney animated film, behind “Moana 2” ($13M) and ahead of “Frozen II” ($8M).
“Zootopia 2” officially hit theaters today, and it’s expected to bring in more than $150M over the Thanksgiving weekend. But that’s not even the big story. Apparently, Chinese audiences love their “Zootopia,” and the sequel is on track to earn a staggering $250M in China alone by Sunday evening. A $500M global opening isn’t out of the question.
In fact, “Zootopia 2” opened with a jaw-dropping $34M day in China — the second-highest post-COVID opening day for a Hollywood film in that country. If you can believe it, the only film ahead is “Fast 9,” which scored a $59M first Friday back in 2021.
More good news: reviews have been strong. The sequel currently sits at 93 % on Rotten Tomatoes and 73 on Metacritic. It could very well win the Animated Oscar next year — there simply isn’t much competition right now (“Kpop Demon Hunters”? “Arco”? “Elio”?).
Meanwhile, “Wicked For Good” continued on its relentless path, posting a $15M Tuesday. It’s worth noting that “Zootopia 2” showings didn’t begin until mid-afternoon yesterday, yet the “Wicked” sequel still delivered one of the biggest Tuesdays of 2025.
That said, Tuesday’s take for “Wicked For Good” fell slightly short of the original’s — which earned $18M on the same day last year. The sequel currently stands at $260 lM globally after just ten days. If this pace holds, it should come close to matching the original’s $758M worldwide gross.
