UPDATE: It took a few days, but we finally have the numbers, and they are brutal. “Christy” grossed $108K this past weekend, from 817 locations, which is a 92% decline from opening weekend. That’s the worst second weekend drop for a wide release in box office history.
No wonder Black Bear refused to cough up the totals. This is one of the more staggering drops in recent box-office history. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea on their part to a) self-distribute the film and b) open it wide. “Christy” is the type of film that could have probably benefited from a slower rollout.
Sweeney will try to brush this one off, as she has “The Housemaid” set for a December release, and of course there’s the third season of “Euphoria,” which is slated for an HBO premiere sometime in spring 2026.
EARLIER: Notice how nobody mentioned “Christy” in the weekend box office recaps? That’s because the film’s distributor, Black Bear, is refusing to divulge the numbers.
How much it made in its second weekend? Lord only knows. For now, it remains a mystery—until a journalist decides to contact exhibitors and come up with an estimate. Call it damage control: no data, no news stories.
How bad could it be? Probably very bad. The film lost close to 1200 screens this past weekend, playing in only around 800 theaters. If attendance is sparse, keeping it in more locations becomes unprofitable for theater chains.
“Christy” only earned $1.2M in its opening weekend and opened the floodgates on a poor showing for Sydney Sweeney, whose every move is now being scrutinized by the media. I’d be shocked if it made half as much this past weekend.
