Following her Palme d’Or win and Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Justine Triet—the French filmmaker behind “Anatomy of a Fall”—continues to attract major attention.
Earlier this week, I reported on producer Marie-Ange Luciani’s Instagram post showing Triet on set with her regular collaborators, including cinematographer Tom Harari. Luciani teasingly captioned the photo (translated from French), “Justine and her gang,” adding a few eyeball emojis that hinted something was brewing.
At the time, speculation pointed toward a possible adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ “Monica,” which Triet had previously been approached to direct, with Cate Blanchett rumored to star. However, Triet had not yet confirmed her involvement, and details remained vague.
Now, a source close to the production tells me that the project in question is not “Monica” but a new original film set in a psychology facility—a tense, contained “huis-clos” (closed-door) drama with crime elements woven through its psychological core.
The source confirms that Sandra Hüller will play the protagonist. This marks Hüller’s third collaboration with Triet, following their acclaimed work together on Sibyl (2019) and Anatomy of a Fall (2023).
While plot specifics remain tightly under wraps, the setting and genre suggest a film that will further explore the moral and psychological territory Triet has made her own. No word yet on when production would begin, but the film is currently in prep.
In the meantime, Hüller is supposed to join the set of Pawel Pawlikowski’s “1949” in the coming week. She’s starred in a handful of highly acclaimed films this decade, including “Toni Erdmann,” “The Zone of Interest,” and “Anatomy of a Fall.” She will be seen in two films next year: Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Project Hail Mary,” and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu’s untitled Tom Cruise movie.
Before “Anatomy of a Fall,” Triet had notably directed “Victoria” (2016) and “Sibyl” (2019). This next project will be be her fifth feature.
