The announcement of Jason Momoa portraying Lobo in ‘Supergirl’ has prompted one filmmaker to publicly reach out to the actor, and request that he direct him in a solo DCU movie.
Yes, David Leitch wants to direct a Lobo movie for DC Studios. The director pitched the idea to Momoa on, of all places, social media. "Let's do a Lobo feature," Leitch commented under Momoa's Lobo casting announcement (via X).
As far as filmmakers who could help Gunn’s DCU, which is still under construction, Leitch isn’t a bad pick, especially when compared to many of the hacks the MCU hires to “direct” their films. Gunn’s DCU has projects in development from the likes of Luca Guadagnino, Mike Flanagan, Craig Gillespie, and James Mangold.
Lobo is an antihero, hailing from the planet Czarnia, and known for his violent and eccentric personality, Lobo possesses superhuman strength, and regenerative abilities. A bounty hunter “who enjoys chaos and destruction.” Lobo has yet to be depicted in a big-budget Hollywood movie.
Gillespie (“I, Tonya”) will be directing “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for James Gunn’s DCU. The plan is shoot this one in January 2025. It’s expected to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
Leitch is coming off 2023’s “The Fall Guy,” which was well-received by critics, but did not do well at the box-office. Leitch was also in serious talks to direct the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie for Universal, but he quickly dropped out, due to “creative differences,” and was replaced by Gareth Edwards.
Leitch specializes in action, and for the most part, he’s had a successful career in directing high-octane films. With the already-mentioned ‘Fall Guy,’ the stunt coordinator-turned-filmmaker has so far helmed “John Wick,” “Atomic Blonde,” “Deadpool 2,” “Hobbs and Shaw,” and “Bullet Train.”
