Steve McQueen's Next Project is Amazon Sci-Fi Series?

September 18, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

A trailer for Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” will be released tomorrow. This is one of the last remaining Oscar-buzzed films left to be screened this fall. The others seem to be “Gladiator II,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Here,” “Juror No. 2,” “Nosferatu” and “Wicked.”

McQueen’s “Blitz,” set to premiere at London BFI on Oct. 9, is being described as “way more accessible” than his acclaimed dramas “12 Years a Slave,” “Shame” and “Hunger.” It’s a PG-13 WWII epic, taking place during the German bombing campaign against the United Kingdom in 1940, that stars Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, Stephen Graham, Erin Kellyman, and Hayley Squires.

It’s safe to say that this is McQueen’s biggest and most commercial undertaking. So, what’s next for him?

The filmmaker tells Deadline that his next project is “with Amazon.” He can’t talk about. I’m thinking it might be “Last Days,” the sci-fi series he signed up to helm for the streaming back in 2020.

“Last Days” was described at the time as a “gripping sci-fi thriller in which the world’s governments have secretly created a controversial plan to selectively colonize Mars in the wake of a dying Earth and the rise of AI”.

The series will follow one woman’s journey to explore the truth about where she came from, at the risk of losing everything she knows. "It's not as dystopian as you'd think, said Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke, who added there's a “twist” to the series.

In the meantime, there’s “Blitz” and as mentioned a trailer will be released online tomorrow. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what McQueen has concocted here.
