Michael Mann's Top 25 Films Includes DreamWorks' Animated ‘Turbo'

August 1, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

It’s always interesting to see legendary filmmakers list and share their favorite films. Earlier in the month, Michael Mann joined Letterboxd, and to celebrate the occasion, Mann decided to list his “14 favorite films.”

Mann’s latest Letterboxd team-up has him going deeper, expanding his list to 25 films. Notably absent on his list is a film that Mann has been praising for over 10 years now, and even included on his 2012 Sight & Sound list, James Cameron’s “Avatar.”

Some of his more eclectic choices include Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Bitufiul,” and the 2013 DreamWorks animation “Turbo,” starring Ryan Reynolds. He also has a major soft spot for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.” Here’s the full list:

“Battleship Potemkin” (Eisenstein)
“Dr. Strangelove” (Kubrick)
“Biutiful” (Inarritu)
“Raging Bull” (Scorsese)
“Incendies” (Villeneuve)

“Poor Things” (Lanthimos)
“Apocalypse Now” (Coppola)
“The Sweet Smell of Success” (Mackendrick)
“The Hurt Locker” (Bigelow)
“Out of the Past” (Tourneur)
“Pan’s Labyrinth” (del Toro)

“Memories of A Murder” (Bong Joon Ho)
