Alfonso Cuarón's ‘Disclaimer' NOT in Apple's 2024 Release Slate

June 10, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

In case you’re wondering what has taken Alfonso Cuarón so long to make another movie, well, he’s been working on an Apple TV limited series titled “Disclaimer,” starring Cate Blanchett, for the better part of three years.

Gary Oldman had originally been cast to co-star with Blanchett, only to then be replaced by Kevin Kline. Cuarón is rumored to have directed, at least, five of the seven episodes in this limited series, with Emmanuel Lubezki and Bruno Delbonnel sharing DP duties.

Today, Apple announced their entire 2024 slate of TV and movies — “Disclaimer” was notably absent. Are we going to have to wait a whole other year? I’ve emailed Apple to comment on this story and will update if any further info comes my way.

After many months of pre production work, filming on “Disclaimer” began in June 2022 and wrapped in March 2023. In fact, one source had originally told me that “Disclaimer” was shot in the UK over the course of 280 days!

Last September, I reported that extensive post-production work was happening on “Disclaimer.” More recently, Blanchett explained that the project was “really more like [shooting] 7 movies.” That’s how expansive and immense the production and scope was on this one. I honestly can’t wait to see what Cuaron has in store here.

Cuarón’s limited series tackles famed television journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, who discovers she is a prominent character in a novel that reveals a secret she has tried to keep hidden for decades. Blanchett and Sacha Baron Cohen play the parents of Kodi Smit-McPhee.

This is set to be Cuarón’s first project since 2018’s Oscar-winning “Roma.” His reputation precedes him; Cuarón is one of the great filmmakers of the 21st Century with films such as “Children of Men,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” “Roma” and “Gravity.”

Later this year, Cuarón is supposed to shoot a new film, “Billy Please Call Home," based off a screenplay he wrote in the early 2000s. The project hasn’t been officially announced, but it was confirmed to be happening by one of its producers, Mark Johnson.
