Adam Wingard to Direct A24’s ‘Onslaught’ — Going Back to Indie Roots

May 2, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Several studios were in a bidding war for Adam Wingard’s “Onslaught.” A24 finally landed the rights for the action-thriller with Wingard on board to direct.

The film reunites Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, they’re the team behind 2013’s “You’re Next” and 2014’s “The Guest.” Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but the film is said to be in the same vein as Wingard’s earlier indie films. Principal photography will begin in Fall 2024.

Wingard is coming off the commercial success of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” which has, so far, grossed over $500 million worldwide. Despite the success of that film, I recently wondered if Wingard would ever direct another original film:

It’s a real shame that Wingard, whom I’ve interviewed in the past, has decided to expend all of his creative energy on silly Kaijus and monsters. Remember, this is the same guy who showed great potential with 2011’s “You’re Next” and 2014’s “The Guest.”

Wingard does not yet have a deal in place for a “Godzilla x Kong” sequel, per THR sources, but he is expected to return, though “Onslaught” will happen first. It’s good and much welcomed news to see Wingard taking a break from monster movies and going back to his indie roots. It’s been a long time coming.
