So it looks like $10 million in previews for “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.”
It’s exceeding all initial projections and now a $75-80M+ opening weekend is the most likely outcome (originally, it was $50 million). It’s also now looking at a $26-28 million Friday. A $200 million worldwide opening is a possibility.
The “monsterverse” is critic-proof — it has a 48 on Metacritic and 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s still a fanbase for these types of movies and it likely contribute in granting director Adam Wingard’s wishes of turning his franchise into a trilogy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the third film gets greenlit by the end of the weekend. These numbers are better than ‘Dune 2.’ Due to last year’s strikes, the 2024 movie schedule looked grim, but theater exhibitors must be ecstatic about there being a handful of successful films playing right now at the multiplexes.
