Golden Globe Noms: ‘Emilia' Leads With 10 Nods, ‘The Substance' Surprises, Villeneuve Snubbed, Sebastian Stan Double Nominee

December 9, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

The 2025 Golden Globe nominations have been announced. These aren’t the same globes as they were even five years ago; the Hollywood Foreign Press Association disbanded, following Penske’s purchase, and an increase in voting membership to improve the diversity of the voting body ensued.

With that said, international voters have boosted “Emilia Perez” which led the way with 10 nominations, “The Brutalist” followed suit with 7 nods, and “Conclave” had the third most with six. “Anora” and “The Substance” each earned five.

I won’t concentrate on all of the categories, you can see them for yourself below, and instead will zero in on the surprising noms and omissions. Firstly, what everyone’s talking about is Denis Villeneuve’s snub in the directing category, and that’s despite “Dune: Part II” getting in for Best Motion Picture. Is he again going to miss out on best director at the Oscars? I still think he’ll get nominated, but the Globes snub is worrisome.

‘Dune II’ wasn’t even submitted for the dubious box office achievement category; the nominees instead were “Alien: Romulus,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Gladiator II,” “Inside Out 2,” “Twisters,” “Wicked” and “The Wild Robot.”

The HFPA had a lot of love for “The Substance,” including giving lead Demi Moore a well-deserved acting nomination; Oscar might be next for Moore. In total, “The Substance” earned five noms, including Motion Picture and Director.

Sebastian Stan was double nominated in acting categories, which ups his Oscar odds. Stan was recognized for his performances in “The Apprentice” and “Different Man” — the former will be his best shot at Oscars. Stan’s ‘Apprentice’ co-star, Jeremy Strong, also earned a Supporting nod.

Other notable snubs include Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”) and Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”). All three could still be contending for acting Oscars, despite being omitted by the Globes. Speaking of “Sing Sing,” save for Domingo Colman’s acting nod, it was completely snubbed by the HFPA.
