Robert Eggers' Next Film Could Be ‘The Knight,' A Western or Rasputin

December 22, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Robert Eggers’s “Nosferatu” is coming on Wednesday.

The reviews have been great, and his stock will be rising because of it. Personally, I thought “Nosferatu,” despite its visual mastery, Lily Rose Depp’s possessed performance, and some expertly crafted moments, did not reach the dizzying heights it so ambitiously aimed for. I also didn’t think Bill Sarsgaard’s vampire was fully sketched out— both in terms of visual design and character depth.

Hey, don’t take my word for it, I seem to be in the minority when it comes to this one. Go ahead and watch the film, it’s definitely worth a look for the way Eggers and DP Jarin Blaschke shoot and lens the whole thing. This is a film made by immensely talented people.

“Nosferatu” has an 82 on Metacritic and 90 on Rotten Tomatoes, and these raves are coming off Eggers’ equally well-reviewed “The Northman,” “The Lighthouse” and “The Witch.” If “Nosferatu” makes decent money, then Eggers is definitely getting his next passion project greenlit.

Eggers is now telling IndieWire that he’s currently juggling multiple projects, and has five films ready to go. He has completed his script for the medieval epic “The Knight,” which has been delayed twice already, and is also preparing a western (which could be an interesting genre for him to tackle).

I have five things going on, because you never know what’s going to work, what’s going to appeal to people, what’s going to be greenlit. [Nosferatu] was not greenlit three times. I absolutely thought I was making a movie that has not gotten greenlit twice instead of this, so you never know. You’ve got to have a lot of stuff going on.

Then there’s Eggers’ Rasputin mini-series, which had originally been greenlit for production in 2017, but was then suddenly nixed soon after. Eggers still wants to make that one: “What’s not to love about Rasputin?”

Eggers’ obsession with fairytales, folktales, and mythology — all firmly researched and developed by him — will likely continue well into the future. With “Nosferatu” potentially opening up more doors for him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he shoots his next project later next year.
