John Boorman, 91, Embarks on ‘The Honey Wars'

October 8, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Iconic filmmaker John Boorman, 91, is still going at it, and has just gotten a long-gestating passion project of his greenlit for the big screen.

His next film appears to be animated, based on a story he created for his children. “The Honey Wars” was a tale that Boorman used to tell his kids and now Dublin-based animation house Kavaleer Productions is developing it as a 90-minute film.

Given that this is Boorman, many actors have reached out to help him make this film. The voice cast will include Jamie Lee Curtis, Vanessa Kirby, Patrick Stewart, Brendan Gleeson, Richard E. Grant and Jon Voight.

“The Honey Wars” is being described as a “dark fantasy.” Here’s the synopsis:

The story follows Hope, a young girl with a secret ability to see the invisible threads that connect the magical world to our own. Recently uprooted by the loss of her mother, she stumbles upon a bitter conflict rooted in two warring tribes: the Fairies and the Elves. She encounters Alfred, a mischievous and exiled Elf, and Fiona, an outcast fairy. The unlikely comrades uncover long-buried truths and begin laying the groundwork for an unthinkable reconciliation in the war-ravaged universe.

Boorman’s statement, “I’m so delighted that this story of myth and magic is being brought to life and I hope that it captures the hearts and minds of many children as it did my own,” he said.

No word yet on whether Boorman will be directing the film. His storied career includes having helmed such works as “Point Blank,” “Deliverance,” “Hope and Glory,” and “Excalibur.” He hasn’t directed a film since 2014’s “Queen and Country.”
