Spike Jonze's Netflix Sci-Fi Series Not Moving Forward

October 24, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

We’ve all been wondering what what’s going on with Spike Jonze’s Netflix sci-fi series. Since his 1999 debut, “Being John Malkovich,” Jonze has only directed four films in a span of 25 years. His last one was the 2013 sci-fi romance, “Her.”

Jonze’s absence is now set to continue as his Netflix series is no longer moving forward, according to Deadline. The project has been shrouded in secrecy, and no plot details ever emerged about it — we do know that Joaquin Phoenix and Brad Pitt were once attached to star.

Jonze has been developing this project for a few years now, and it’s been in pre-production since 2022. As I had previously reported, and now corroborated by Deadline’s own sources, things were starting moving quickly as recently as June, and an early 2025 production date was being eyed.

Puck previously described Jonze’s vision on the series as “ambitious” and “lavish.” There was also a writers room installed to deal with the show’s “broad and expansive canvas.” It’s all a real shame, and the only good news out of this is that now, maybe, Jonze can concentrate on an actual film as his next project.
