‘The Day the Earth Blew Up' Sets Up Oscar-Qualifying Run

October 17, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: It’s been announced that “The Day the Earth Blew Up” will make its North American premiere on Saturday at the Animation is Film Festival. In their press release, Ketchup mentioned how the goal is for an “Oscar-qualifying run” that’ll make the film eligible for Best Animated Feature Oscar.

EARLIER: “The Day the Earth Blew Up” is the first proper Looney Tunes movie in years, but Warner Bros. wanted nothing to do with it. In August, Warners brokered a deal with Ketchup Entertainment to distribute the film in theaters.

Today we’ve learned that ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ will release February 28, 2025 in theaters. The film, originally greenlit for HBO Max in 2021, was supposed to be part of the tax write-offs at Warner Bros, much like “Coyote v Acme” and “Batgirl”, but ended up having its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June where it was met with very positive reactions.

Directed by Pete Browngardt, the sci-fi comedy adventure follows the adventures of Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they uncover a sinister alien invasion plot while working at the local bubble gum factory.

The film spurred enthusiastic laughter throughout the screening, with some standout moments for the crowd including scenes that focused on the lead duo’s upbringing and their attempts to find a job.

This is all great news for the film, and I’m looking forward to seeing it, but now we need an update on “Coyote v Acme.” I have this sneaking suspicion that it’s already been written off and destroyed by Warners.
