Bong Joon-ho's ‘Mickey 17' Receives an R Rating & Wildy Different Korean Trailer

October 2, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Bong Joon ho’s “Mickey 17” has finally been put in the can. Post-production work is done on the film, and we know this because the MPA has just given Bong’s upcoming film an R-rating “for violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.”

I figured an “R” rating would happen for this film, especially given the fact that the titular character (played by Robert Pattinson) has to endure multiple deaths throughout the story. The film is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, but Bong, who wrote the screenplay, decided to add an additional 10 reincarnations of the Mickey character.

It should be mentioned that a trailer for “Mickey 17” was released two weeks ago, and although its comedic beats turned off some viewers, the Korean trailer is drastically different in tone and vibe. It plays like it’s aiming for a totally different audience, with more emphasis on drama and tension.

Earlier this year, Bong’s $150M sci-fi film had its release date delayed to a dubious January 31, 2025 slot. It was originally Bong’s wishes to premiere this one at Cannes, but Warner Bros decided to schedule it into the dumping grounds of January. We’ll see how this one turns out, but one should never discount Bong.
