“Wonka” will finally get dethroned this weekend by the “Mean Girls” musical. The estimates have “Mean Girls” nabbing a $31 million opening. The Jason Statham led “Beekeper” is set to finish second ($14 million) and “Wonka” could end up in third place ($11 million).
This is based on presales and Thursday previews, “Mean Girls” had $3 million in ticket sales on Thursday. Meanwhile, “The Color Purple” might not even finish in the top 10 — it’s so far amassed $55 million.
So, how have the reviews been so far for the Friday releases? “Mean Girls,” directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr, has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes and 59 on Metacritic. “Beekeeper” sits at 72% on RT and 53 on MC. Nothing to write home about, but it’s also not a total disaster. It’ll be interesting gauge audience reactions for these two.
