Jonathan Glazer Says His Next Film “Will Be About Tenderness”

January 11, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Director Jonathan Glazer is one of the seminal visionaries to have emerged in the film circuit these last twenty or so years.

His ultra-stylized 2000 debut, the gangster film, “Sexy Beast,” turned heads for its stunning visuals. However, Glazer only got better after that, giving us three films since, including the highly underrated “Birth,” and his masterpiece, “Under the Skin.”

One of the most anticipated movies of 2023 was Glazer’s fourth feature, the minimalist holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest,” which stunned audiences at Cannes last May, and was recently named the Best Film of 2023 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

So, what’s next for Glazer? It seems as though the topic of the holocaust has really drained him and he’s looking for his next film to be the total opposite of ‘Zone’ — here’s an excerpt from an L.A. Times interview:

His next film, he tells me, will be about “tenderness — how tender we can be as well.” It won’t come for a while. Meanwhile, there is the position Glazer now finds himself in, releasing his most celebrated effort in a reinvigorated awards season, with the wider implications of making a movie about violent political disassociation available to anyone who wants them

Tenderness? Is Glazer going soft on us? I doubt that, but I get what he’s saying. ‘Zone’ was all about Nazis, and how humanity can easily turn a blind eye on evil, even as it’s, quite literally, happening next door.

Needless to say, it does sound as though Glazer has an idea as to what will be next for him, but he’s not ready to reveal the project, just yet.

With that said, I don’t think we’ll be getting a new Glazer for a little while. He takes his time with whatever he works on. ‘Zone’ was released almost 10 years after his last effort, 2013’s “Under the Skin,” and his post-production work on each of those films ran for close to two years.
