‘Foe’ Reaction at NYFF

September 27, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Garth Davis’ “Foe” is supposed to be screened for press at the New York Film Festival, but blogger Erik Anderson seems to have broken the embargo by tweeting out a reaction:

FOE is a disappointment for me, feels like it thinks it’s far more profound than it is (it’s rather simplistic) about AI and climate change but Saoirse Ronan gets a fuck ass bob and Paul Mescal gets to act at 11 most of the time. Aaron Pierre is creepy and cool.

If anyone has the definition for what a “fuck ass bob” might be then please let me know, I’m very curious.

This is the type of reaction I expected, especially after hearing that this summer’s test-screening for the film gathered up a lot of middling reactions. It was described to me as a “slow burn” that isn’t really that involving until the sci-fi elements kick in during the final stretch.

The film, set in 2065, stars Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal as a couple living out in the middle of a desert who have their calm life rattled when a mysterious stranger (Aaron Pierre) comes knocking at their door one night.

A trailer was released last month. The film is set to be released on October 6th, via Amazon. Davis broke out with his 2016 Oscar-nominated feature “Lion,” he then struck out with his follow-up, “Mary Magdelene.” The trailer bills him as a “visionary filmmaker,” which he is not.
