According to Production Weekly, Guillermo del Toro’s “Dr. Frankenstein” is planning to start production in February of 2024. Of course, that’ll depend on whether or not the current SAG-AFTRA strike can come to a resolution.
After teaming up with Netflix for “Pinocchio” and “Cabinet of Curiosities,” del Toro will again be working with the streaming giant for his long-gestating passion project. Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Andrew Garfield are part of the cast.
Set in 19th century Eastern Europe, the film is the story of Dr. Pretorious, who needs to track down Frankenstein's monster — who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before — in order to continue the experiments on him.
“The fact is I’ve been dreaming of doing a ‘Frankenstein’ movie since I was a child,” Del Toro told ComingSoon back in 2008. His dream might soon be realized.
Netflix optioned Frankenstein in March 2022 from Elizabeth S. Wrightson. The novel was first published more than 200 years
Del Toro is known to have many collectibles of Boris Karloff as the monster and has been developing this project for over a decade. The closest he got to making the film was in 2018, but soon after Universal Pictures scrapped the entire thing due to their planned monster-verse movies bombing at the box-office.
Del Toro’s last film was 2022’s “Pinocchio,” which won him the Oscar for Best Animated Film. His last live-action project was 2021’s “Nightmare Alley.”
