George A. Romero’s “Final Zombie Movie” Plans Late 2023 Shoot

August 2, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

George A. Romero’s 2017 passing was a real big loss to cinema. I mean, the guy literally invented Zombies! I remember first seeing his 1967 classic "Night of the Living Dead" in the wee wee hours of the night, transfixed, amazed by its black and white horrors.

Of course, when it comes to Romero, one should not just recommend that horror classic. Romero wasn't a one hit wonder. He ended up with a few note-worthy films in his career: "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead" being two of them.

Another addition to the canon of Romero essentials could be 1973's underrated "The Crazies," which, unlike the aforementioned titles, had nothing to do with zombies, but instead focused on a virus that caused people to go insane in a small Pennsylvania town.

EDIT: I forgot about “Martin,” this little seen ‘70s movie that might actually be the best one he’s ever made.

Regardless, Romero was still making movies well into his 70s, obsessed with zombies more than ever, while the genre was expanding all around him with numerous different, especially “The Walking Dead.”

Now comes word, via Deadline, that Romero’s “final zombie movie” titled “Twilight Of The Dead,” has a planned late 2023 start date in Puerto Rico. The George A. Romero estate is teaming up with financier-producer Roundtable on the “seventh and final instalment” of the seminal ‘Living Dead’ franchise.

Romero had written the script for the movie before he passed away and regarded “Twilight Of The Dead” as the conclusion to his “Living Dead” saga.

Here’s the synopsis:

Set on a tropical island, we’re told Twilight Of The Dead will “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead”. True to the Romero oeuvre, it is being framed by the producers as “thought-provoking sociopolitical commentary wrapped in a genre piece”.

A director is very close to signing up for this film, but no announcement has been made just yet. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as Romero continues to spook us beyond the grave.
