‘Barbie’ Grosses $22.3 Million on Thursday, Best Previews Total of 2023

July 21, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Thursday's preview grosses for "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" are astonishing. And, what’s that? In only its second weekend of release, ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ might land at #4, right behind …“Sound of Freedom”?

Get ready for a wild weekend at the box-office. “Barbie” collected the best previews of not only this summer, but of 2023 with a $22.3 million tally, besting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s $17.5 million. An opening of, at least, $130 million is practically sealed.

This places “Barbie” at number 24 on the all-time previews list. Fueled by relentless marketing from Warner Bros. and Mattel, “Barbie” is going to be the movie of the summer, and it’s not even close.

Universal says Oppenheimer did $10.5 million at 3,150 theaters. Now some of the experts are saying this 3-hour, dialogue-driven, black and white film might go as high as $90 million this weekend. If it does reach that number then “Oppenheimer” would nab the 7th highest opening for an R-rated movie in history.
