Venice Lineup! Wes Anderson, Fincher, Hamaguchi, Lanthimos, Mann, Larrain, Friedkin, Korine, Linklater, Polanski, Woody and … DuVernay?!

July 25, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Well, Venice just ate TIFF’s lunch. Wow. The 80th Venice Film Festival announced its lineup this morning and the surprises kept coming.

Firstly, as reported, David Fincher’s “The Killer’ will indeed have its world premiere at Venice. The film also released its first image, which can be seen above. I wonder if it’ll also go to Telluride and/or New York now.

Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar” will play out of competition. So will Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance” and Roman Polanski’s “The Palace.”

William Friedkin’s “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial,” his first film in over ten years, shot in a sound stage, will also be premiering out of competition on the Lido.

However, the biggest surprise might be “Drive My Car” filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi having a new film, which we had no clue even existed, it’s titled “Evil Does Not Exist.”

No surprise to see competition titles such as Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Michel Franco’s “Memory,” Luc Besson’s “Dogman,” and Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast.”

And, how about Harmony Korine bringing his latest, “Aggro Dr1ft,” a film we had only first heard about two weeks ago, starring Travis Scott and shot in infrared.
