On Saturday, I asked our readers to post their lists for the best films of the year, so far. Many were submitted, and ‘Oppie’ easily came out on top. I want to truly thank everyone for participating.
When compared to our mid-year critics poll, it seems as though “Beau is Afraid” and “How to Blow Up A Pipeline” have far more fans over here. I also love to see “Pacifiction” getting some love, especially since it wasn’t even close to being a wide release. Here are the results:
1. Oppenheimer — 43 votes
2. Beau is Afraid — 28
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — 24
4. Past Lives — 20
5. Asteroid City — 19
6. Barbie — 18
7. How to Blowup A Pipeline — 16
8. John Wick: Chapter 4 — 15
9. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning 13
10. Pacifiction — 12
Despite not even being released yet, Ira Sachs’ “Passages” managed to be included on four lists. It’s out in theaters this coming Friday.
Netflix and Skydance Animation have also called it quits. The two sides announced Monday that they're ending the animated film deal struck back in 2023, framing it as a mutual decision.
