J.C. Chandor’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Has A Trailer

June 19, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

J.C. Chandor is, was, in my world, a potential major U.S. filmmaker in the making. His first few films included “Margin Call,” “All is Lost” and, especially, “A Most Violent Year” were impressive.

I interviewed Chandor in the spring of 2019. He was about to release his fourth feature, the underrated “Triple Frontier” on Netflix. He had mentioned how the film industry was not changing for the better:

They have turned into these massive $200M retreads or very very small, really original low-budget stuff, but everything in between has been abandoned for the most part unless it fits into a popular genre. Other than those, the two-hour drama has completely disappeared.

Then I asked him about Marvel, this was his answer:

Am I going to go out and make the 19th Marvel movie? Probably not.

Well, he’s technically made a Marvel movie now with “Kraven the Hunter” — a surprising choice for Chandor. The upcoming film is based on the Marvel Comics character, but is being produced by Sony. A trailer has been released.

Why has Chandor decided to hop on-board the Marvel train? Who knows. Maybe he wants the paycheck to fund his next more serious mid-budget effort.

‘Kraven’ stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff who goes on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world. It looks bloody, merciless, silly and, hopefully, an R rating awaits it. However, the CGI looks terrible.

Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe and Christopher Abbott complete the cast. “Kraven the Hunter” is scheduled to be released on October 6, 2023.
