Cannes: Catherine Corsini and Jean-Stephane Sauvaire Added to Competition

April 24, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

More additions to the Cannes Film Festival.

Catherine Corsini’s “Le Retour” is finally in. The controversy surrounding the film was not enough for the Cannes selection committee to omit her presence. Fremaux must really like her film to go to bat for her the way that he did. This means a record seven female filmmakers will compete for the Palme d’Or next month.

Also, as mentioned last week, not only has Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s “The Black Flies” been selected, but it turns out that it’s in competition. Go figure. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Sean Penn, Katherine Waterston, Michael Pitt and Mike Tyson.

Added to the Cannes Premiere section are two Latin-American entries, Lisandro Alonso’s “Eureka” and Amat Escalante’s “Perdidos En La Noche,” both were touted as possibilities for competition but that was all for nothing.

Where’s Bruno Dumont’s “L’Empire” and Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast,” at one point they were major possibilities. One would have to imagine they are now headed to Venice. From what I’m hearing, not too sure about Robin Campillo’s “Red Island” …

Fremaux also decided to add Robert Rodriguez’ “Hypnotic” in the Midnight section. The film was ill-received at this past March’s SXSW Film Festival.

The competition section is now set, the hot titles will be films from Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Alice Rohrwacher.

The 76th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from the 16th to the 27th of May. You can see the full list of additions to the upcoming lineup below:
