‘Barbie’ Trailer …

April 4, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The official trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been released. Can you say CAMP?

After the glowing test screening reactions from last month, we can now see for ourselves the vibe and tone that Gerwig is aiming for here. The whole thing looks very colourful with appropriately inserted inside jokes, PG-13 approved, of course.

Sure, why not? This could be a delight. It’s a $100 million risk from Gerwig, but she seems to be revelling in this world she’s created — not to mention the Beach Boys’ “Fun, Fun, Fun” added into the background for good measure.

Ryan Gosling is said to steal the show as Ken and his performance does look very amusing. There’s also said to be an inordinate amount of celebrity cameos in the film.

Gerwig has been very clear about her movie very much being a feminist odyssey. Co-star Ferrell even told the Wall Street Journal that the film addressed how women are treated in society by the patriarchy. Gerwig’s track record as a filmmaker (“Lady Bird” and “Little Women”) will no doubt heed massive critical support.

The cast is also ridiculously stacked: Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and many more.

Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote the screenplay for “Barbie,” which is a very meta tackling of the famous Mattel doll. The all-star tech team behind it also includes cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and composer Alexandre Desplat.

A very odd rivalry is being spun on social media. As you know, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” will be going head to head on July 21st, 2023. Who will win the box-office? Who cares?
