Beyoncé Tops the Box-Office; ‘Wish’ Drops 64%, ‘Marvels’ Continues to to Tank

December 3, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Another disappointing weekend at the box-office.

“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” made around $21 million this weekend, which is $72 million less than what Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ concert movie made in its opening weekend. Clearly, the Swift release was a novelty that couldn’t be replicated.

Speaking of novelties, “The Marvels” is nearing the end of its box office run as the lowest grossing MCU movie of all time. ‘Marvels’ grossed an estimated $2.51M this weekend (from 2,200 locations), finishing in 11th place. Its estimated domestic gross total now stands at $80.74M.

Disney, apparently, wants people to quickly forget about the colossal ‘Marvels’ failure. The studio wrote on Sunday in a note to press, “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”

Speaking of Disney, they have another disaster on their hands. The animated “Wish,” which opened to an anemic $32 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, and cost $200 million to produce, dropped roughly 64 percent in its second week, coming in fifth for the weekend.

This 64% drop for the animated movie is actually worse than the 58% drop of last year’s animated Disney stinker “Strange World”, also released on Thanksgiving weekend.

Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” went to VOD on Tuesday, but still ended up making over $1 million this weekend in theaters. If it had not gone to VOD, that number would be higher. The indie has grossed $15 million domestically. Studios are just too impatient these days. A real shame.

So, what big titles are left this year? Three in particular stand out: “Wonka” (12.15.23), “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (12.22.25) and “The Color Purple” (12.25.23).
