Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Sets Early 2024 Shoot in Paris

November 15, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Jim Jarmusch hasn’t released a movie in four years, but that will likely change very soon as we now have news of a new project coming from the 70-year-old writer-director.

Variety is reporting that Jarmusch plans to shoot his next film, early next year, in Paris. Is this the French-language film that Jarmusch has hinted about in the past? I wouldn’t be surprised.

This past April, at the 2023 Overlook Film Festival, Jarmusch sat down for a conversation concerning the tenth anniversary of his great “Only Lovers Left Alive.” During that discussion, Jarmusch mentioned that he was preparing to shoot a new film in the fall.

“The film we’re preparing now for late this year to shoot, probably, I think, may have no music […] It’s a very subtle film; it’s very quiet. And I think music could move it too much one way — it’s a funny and sad film, right? It sort of has both woven in. I don’t know if I wanna have music to add some other thing over it. It doesn’t really want it so far.”

Of course, the strikes happened and the film was delayed. So, it looks as though an early 2024 shoot is now planned.

Jarmusch has had 12 movies premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, I bet this one will be at the 2025 edition of the fest. Jarmusch’s most recent film, “The Dead Don’t Die,” was one of his worst-reviewed, a meandering deadpan zombie with with no bite.

The Ohio-born filmmaker has been a mainstay of the indie movie scene since the ‘80s. His minimalist, unhurried and idiosyncratic films don’t follow transitional narrative structures, but rather tend to focus more on mood.

Jarmusch’s best films are “Paterson,” “Only Lovers Left Alive,” “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Broken Flowers,” “Down By Law,” and “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” However, he has such an eclectic filmography that I’m sure some of his other works will be mentioned in the comments below.
