Gotham Nominees Include ‘Past Lives,’ ‘All of Us Strangers,’ ‘Passages’ and ‘Reality’

October 24, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The nominees for the 2023 Gotham Awards were announced this morning.

If you remember, earlier this year, the Gothams removed the budgetary constraints to qualify — it was previously any feature film under $30 million. Now, a film could have cost as high as $150 million and would still qualify. No “indie spirit” there.

And yet, if you look at this morning’s nominees, most of the films and actors nominated do stem from the indie world.

Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” was tops with four nominations including Best International Feature, Best Screenplay, Outstanding Lead Performance (Andrew Scott), and Outstanding Supporting Performance (Claire Foy).

Celine Song’s “Past Lives” nabbed three nominations including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Outstanding Lead Performance (Greta Lee). The film was a shoo-in to get nominated in these categories and it did not disappoint.

The category that most intrigues me is Best Feature, the nominees include “Past Lives,” “Passages,” “Reality,” “Showing Up” and “A Thousand and One.” Additionally, the Best International Feature nominees are “Poor Things,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Totem” and “The Zone of Interest.”

A few notable films decided not to be submitted for the Gothams, including “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “The Color Purple.” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was among the blockbusters that did decide to submit — this resulted in Ryan Gosling being nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance.

The complete list of nominees.
