Cannes 2023 Predictions #1 Include Scorsese, Anderson, Lanthimos, Glazer, Haynes, Payne and Godard

January 15, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Hard to believe that the Cannes lineup will be revealed in a little over 3 months from now. A lot of spitballing to come on my part. The last list was from around a month ago, but a lot has happened since then.

I’ve taken off Ari Aster’s “Beau is Afraid,” which now has an April release date.

Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” also seems very unlikely given that it’s still in production.

Lynne Ramsay’s “Stone Mattress” was supposed to start production in December, but a delay has occurred and we don’t really know if the project has been scrapped altogether now.

Since Maiwenn’s “Jeanne de Barry” is a Netflix production then it will most likely not show up here or maybe it’ll garner an out of competition slot.

Roman Polanski’s “The Palace” has an April release date in Italy. It can still technically make it to Cannes, but my hopes of seeing this one on the Croisette are dwindling by the day.

Consider this my first official predictions of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. A lot will change between now and when the lineup is revealed in late March, there are always surprises in store. Also, when Berlin announces its lineup next week a few of these might show up there and will thus be taken out. Maybe Radu Jude and Ali Kaurismaki?

I have gathered up 29 potential titles for competition. I’m not focusing on sidebars, just official competition contenders. If I’m missing any then please let us know in the comments.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City”
Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest”
Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things”
Woody Allen’s “WASP22”
Todd Haynes’ “May/December”
Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers”
Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders”
Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera”
Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla”
Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “On Barren Weeds”
Abdherrane Sissako’s “The Perfumed Hill”
Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw”
Michel Franco’s “Memory”
Jean-Luc Godard’s “Scenario”/“Funny Wars”
Robin Campillo’s “École de l'air”
Catherine Breillat’s “Last Summer”
Bruno Dumont’s “The Empire”
Bertrand Bonnello’s “The Beast”
Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall”
