What is Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ About Exactly?

June 16, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Yesterday afternoon a photo of Ryan Gosling as Ken Doll was released online by Warner Bros. Gosling looks ridiculous as the plasticized doll. It’s pure camp. He stars alongside Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.”

What is this movie even about? What's the plot? It’s quite clear Gerwig won’t be playing it straight and may be aiming for a meta feel with her movie. Is it even for kids? Gerwig and her crew are keeping it all very hush hush.

I’m as dumbfounded as you are by this project. Gerwig and partner Noah Baumbach wrote the screenplay. The film started its London shoot in March. The current IMDB synopsis for the film states, “A doll living in 'Barbieland' is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.”

Saoirse Ronan is said to play an “alternate” Barbie. Will Ferrell is most likely playing a Mattel CEO.

A 2023 theatrical release is planned.
